Portola House

This residence tucked away in Portola Valley, home to a family of four, was completely remodeled. The interiors are luxurious and modern, possessing a harmonious blend of elements that are both minimalist and inviting.

Mallon opened up the area between the kitchen and den by removing staircase walls and replacing them with a clear glass railing. For the master bathroom, she eliminated the dated travertine marble using warm-organic feeling materials. A solid walnut bathtub custom-made for the room reflects the natural wood outside. She went high-tech by installing an electronic system similar to those used in swimming pools that keep the water hot and clean so that the client can reuse it.

Details

Highlights include the custom lighting in the kitchen. Due to the ceiling height, it was a challenge to light the kitchen countertop properly. Mallon designed custom linear LED fixtures that project consistent light to all surfaces. An LED pendant light illuminates the dining room with a wet bar that sits adjacent. The cabinetry and countertops are all custom, including coplanar doors in the cabinet in the living room, concealing all the electric components.
