After engaging Isolina Mallon in 2013 to renovate and expand an existing house, the clients, a family of four, continued to use her expertise and build a new dream home from the ground up. They hired Mallon from the start of the project, and she collaborated closely with both the architect Carrasco & Associates and the homeowner to create a bold, Avant-Garde single-family residence in Hillsborough.

Mallon designed the interiors with the family's needs in mind. An open layout with large, inviting communal spaces and a designated area for entertainment, including a home theater on the lower floor. Unique pieces sourced from Europe fill the Bay Area residence. The design team adapted the structure of the house to the sloped hill by joining two structural elements with a transparent staircase connecting all three levels with an independent wing for the master bedroom and the guest bedroom. Expansive windows provide panoramic views of Hillsborough's natural surroundings, also viewed from the rooftop above the master bedroom.

Details

At the entrance, a 10-foot-high wooden door opens up into a space with glass walls and details that reflect natural light from all angles. All the Kreon and Pure Edge lighting fixtures are frameless and recessed into the ceiling, including a vertical linear luminaire embedded in the wall, making it one of the most elaborate components of the house. The breakfast nook features three floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows that integrate the trees and sky with the kitchen, providing an organic and colorful element. A David Trubridge Coral Pendant Lamp brings the point of contrast to the green outside.
